Understanding the Lutheran Faith
If you’re exploring Christianity or wondering what Lutherans believe, we’re glad you’re here. At Gethsemane Lutheran Church, we are part of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS), a Christian denomination rooted in the Bible and the historic teachings of the Christian Church.
Our beliefs are centered on Jesus Christ who He is, what He has done for us, and what that means for our lives today.
The Bible Is God’s Word
Lutherans believe that the Bible is the inspired and trustworthy Word of God. It is the foundation for everything we teach, believe, and confess.
Because Scripture is God’s Word:
- It is true and reliable
- It reveals who God is
- It shows us our need for salvation
- It points us to Jesus Christ
Everything we believe as Lutherans comes from the Bible.
Saved by Grace Through Faith
At the heart of what Lutherans believe is the good news of salvation.
We believe that:
- We are saved by grace alone (God’s undeserved love)
- Through faith alone (trust in Jesus Christ)
- As revealed in Scripture alone
We cannot earn God’s forgiveness by our own efforts. Instead, salvation is a gift given through Jesus—through His life, death, and resurrection.
Jesus Is at the Center
Lutherans believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man, sent to save us from sin and death.
Through Jesus:
- Our sins are forgiven
- We are reconciled to God
- We receive eternal life
Everything in the Christian faith points to Jesus and what He has done for us.
God’s Gifts in Baptism and Communion
Lutherans believe that God gives His grace not only through His Word, but also through the Sacraments.
Baptism:
Through Baptism, God gives forgiveness of sins, new life, and salvation. Baptism is for all people, including infants, because it is God’s work not ours.
Holy Communion (The Lord’s Supper):
In Communion, Jesus truly gives His body and blood along with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins. This is a real gift from Christ to strengthen our faith.
Worship Centered on Word and Sacrament
Lutheran worship is rooted in Scripture and shaped by the historic Christian liturgy.
In worship, we:
- Hear God’s Word read and preached
- Confess our sins and receive forgiveness
- Pray together as a congregation
- Sing hymns that teach and reflect the faith
- Receive the Sacraments
Worship is where God serves us with His gifts and strengthens our faith.
Faithful to Historic Christian Teaching
Lutherans hold to a collection of writings called the Lutheran Confessions, which clearly explain the teachings of the Bible.
These confessions:
- Do not replace Scripture
- Help clarify what we believe
- Keep our teaching grounded in biblical truth
They connect us to the historic Christian faith that has been passed down through generations.
Living Out Our Faith
Lutherans believe that good works do not earn salvation—but they naturally flow from faith.
As Christians, we seek to:
- Love and serve others
- Live according to God’s Word
- Grow in faith through worship and Scripture
- Share the hope of Christ with those around us
Our lives are shaped by God’s grace and lived in response to His love.
