What Is Baptism?

Baptism is one of the ways God brings His grace into our lives. At Gethsemane Lutheran Church, we believe Baptism is not just a symbol, but a powerful gift from God where He gives forgiveness, new life, and salvation.

Through water and God’s Word, Baptism connects us to Jesus Christ and His promises.

Baptism Is God’s Work

Lutherans believe that Baptism is something God does for us, not something we do for Him.

In Baptism, God:

  • Forgives sins
  • Gives new spiritual life
  • Makes us His children
  • Strengthens faith

Because Baptism depends on God’s promise, it is certain and trustworthy.

Baptism and the Promise of Salvation

The Bible teaches that Baptism is closely connected to salvation, not because of the water itself, but because of God’s Word and promise.

In Baptism:

  • We are united with Jesus in His death and resurrection
  • We receive the forgiveness of sins
  • We are brought into God’s family

Baptism is one of the ways God delivers the grace won for us by Jesus on the cross.

Baptism Is for All People

Baptism is for everyone, including infants, children, and adults.

We baptize infants because:

  • They also need God’s grace
  • God’s promises are for all people
  • Faith is a gift from God, not something we create

Adults who have not been baptized are also invited to receive this gift and be welcomed into the Christian faith.

What to Expect at a Baptism Service

A Baptism takes place during a worship service or in a special service with family and friends.

During Baptism:

  • Water is applied in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
  • God’s Word is spoken
  • The congregation welcomes the newly baptized

For infants and children, parents and sponsors make promises to raise the child in the Christian faith.

A Lifelong Promise

Baptism is not a one-time event that we leave behind. It is a lifelong source of comfort and assurance.

Because of Baptism:

  • We belong to God
  • We have the promise of forgiveness
  • We can return daily to God’s grace

Baptism reminds us who we are in Christ and gives us confidence in His promises.
